Reuter’s Leah Eichler points out that “Some private employers as well as local governments are offering a four-day week as a perk that eliminates two commutes a week. In the automaking heartland, the shorter workweek offers employers a way of rewarding employees when the budget does not allow a salary increase. ” (Ask…) I am not sure if this can be applied universally to all areas, because some jobs will definitely suffer from low-productive gains from the shortening of work days.

I think the focus should be on our means of getting to the work place. A lot of Americans have already changed their driving habits to make their commute more efficient. Some have been taking public transportations to beat the morning rush while saving gas costs.  People even moved to a location that is closer to their work place. Americans are adjusting to the new climate very well, but it has not been easy for all of us as gas prices hit 4 dollars a gallon.

Eichler asks “What measures are you taking to reduce your commuting times?” Fortunately, I live on campus, but if I was in a situation in choosing my mode of transportation, then I will probably pick public transportation. It’s reliable and fast. I can load up some podcasts or audio-books on my mp3 player be productive while sitting on the bus or the train.
