President Musharraf has declared state of emergency and has suspended the Constitution. The Supreme Court of Pakistan called Musharraf’s action illegal, and the chief justice of the Supreme Court Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry was shortly expelled from his post by government forces. Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto called Musharraf’s actions disappointing. Musharraf’s decision comes in as the Supreme Court is deciding the legitimacy of Musharraf’s candidacy of the October reelection. Pakistan holds nuclear weapons, making the situation more critical.
