Confusion in Georgia and Russia

There seems to be a lot of confusion in regards to the recent conflict between Russia and Georgia. Conflicting reports from government officials and reporters on the scene makes it difficult to see what is truly going on in the disputed region. Furthermore, there seems to be a battle of propaganda from both Georgia and Russia in terms of trying to swing international public opinion to their side.

ABC News reports that Confusion Reigns in the Caucasus. While some believe that Russia’s "peace-keeping occupation” might be a short term stay, ABC reports that some Russian soldiers believe that the occupation might last about a year.

The public also seems to be confused with the situation. Many seem to be brushing the situation as a simple violation of national sovereignty from Russia. However, it is clear that Russia’s action was not arbitrary by any means. There was a triggering event by the Georgian government that forced Russia to make its move. The situation is more complicated than most people think, and I personally have not been able to understand the context fully yet.

Although there were some fierce exchange of words between the United States and Russia, I believe the story will calm down in the next couple of weeks. Russian troops will probably be stationed in the disputed territory for a couple of months, but I believe and hope that the worst has passed by already.
