Kosovo declares independence

During a special parliamentary session, the government of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia, becoming the newest sovereign state. The declaration generated harsh criticisms from the Serbian President, and Russia warned that Kosovo's independence could set a dangerous precedent for other separates groups. The United States and the European Union are asking for calm, and the United Nations Security Council is meeting to discuss the independence.
