New study finds high energy usage in U.S. data centers

A study that was commissioned by AMD found that U.S. data centers spend enough electricity to power about 4 million homes which costs about $2.7 billion each year. As Web 2.0 boom have demanded more computing power, the demand of power from servers and cooling systems have gone up. The study estimates that U.S. servers use 1.2% of the entire U.S. power consumption. Many companies are encouraging power efficient processors and water cooling systems to save electricity.

Microsoft Windows Vista launched

The long awaited Operating System has been released as Microsoft launched Windows Vista to 70 different countries. Microsoft has also launched Microsoft Office 2007 that has newly designed interface and new features. Windows Vista comes in four editions: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate. Users can either buy the new operating system in stores or download them at Microsoft's website. The new operating system features a new interface, swift integration with other devices, more secure environment, and other additions and improvements from the previous Windows XP.

Microsoft opens CodePlex to developers

Microsoft opened CodePlex, a community-based code sharing site, to the public. The site will allow software developers to view source code of several Microsoft products and even post their own to the site. This move is another adjustment that Microsoft is making after an outcry for more "open" policy by software developers. The site is planned to have better interaction between Microsoft employees and other software developers.

Microsoft released "Zune"

Microsoft released its first player "Zune" to the market. Although preliminary reviews of the player falls short of becoming an "iPod killer", the software company is hopeful that new features in Zune would give a boost in a market dominated by Apple's iPod. Zune has one of the largest color screen in the mp3 player market, allowing users to watch music videos comfortably. Microsoft is also touting Zune's wireless capabilities that allows users to share songs wirelessly. Zune is sold at a price of $250.

Digg.com plans to release version 3

Digg, one of the largest social Web 2.0 sites on the web, is planning to release version 3.0 on its site. Digg allows users to submit web links, and other digg users are able to "digg" the story if the entry is found intriguing. If the entry receives enough "digg" the story makes it to the front page of the site. This structure allows the reader to choose which entry to be on the front page, opposed to a group of editors. This interactive website has over 300,000 registered users with 8.5 million unique hits per month. Version 3 promises more features to its users.
