The New York Times reports North Korean Nuclear Test Partial Success

The New York Times reported that the North Korean nuclear test seems to be a partial test. The newspaper cited officials who said the blast of the nuclear test was 1 kilotons or less, a fraction of power than the first nuclear weapon detonation. Officials believe there was some type of failure in the nuclear test. There were mixed seismic readings, but the U.S. government reported that a seismic readings of 4.2 magnitude. Officials believe that it is highly unlikely that the North Koreans faked the nuclear test with a chemical weapon.

Conflict in Lebanon increases as both sides increase attacks

As Israel continues to bombard Lebanon with artillery fire and tank barrages, Hezbollah continuously fired rockets towards highly populated Israeli cities, such as the port city of Haifa. When Israeli commanders stated that the bombings have taken most of Hezbollah's infrastructures, Hezbollah's leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah appeared to be confident in an interview with Aljazeera and claimed that the terrorist group was not harmed by the Israeli attacks. The conflict is expected to escalate as United Nations weighed into the situation with Secretary General Kofi Annan criticized both Hezbollah and Israel.

Hopes for Korea's advance to the World Cup ends

Many Koreans saw with dismay as the Korean team lost to Switzerland that ended Korea's advances in the World Cup. The game ended with 2:0 with Switzerland's Senderose scoring in the 22 minute mark and Frei scoring in the 76 minute mark. Many Korean fans were furious in the second goal, because the flag was called up and the referee didn't stop the game. This lead to confusion in the Korean defense and allowed Swiss Frei to make the second shot for Switzerland.

Italy wins the World Cup

The two teams fought hard, but Italy triumphed and defeated France to win the World Cup. Both teams made a score early in the game. Zidane made the first goal for the French on a penalty kick in the sixth minute, while Materazzi made a successful head-shot for the Italian team in the eighteenth minute. But two teams struggled to score a point. The Italian offense struggled on the attack, while the French offense continued to miss key opportunities for a goal. The game went to overtime, where no team made any progress. But in the 109th minute French player Zidane made a head attack against another Italian player. Zidane received a red card, which was a crucial blow to the French team. The Italians won the game by a 5 to 3 penalty kicks against France.

U.S. loss against Ghana ends World Cup prospects

The intensive struggle to stay in the World Cup ended as Ghana defeated the U.S. team in 2-1 victory. The U.S. team needed to defeat Ghana to have any prospects to continue staying in the World Cup. Ghana made the first goal in the 21 minute mark, but U.S. tied the score in the 42 minute mark. In the second half, Ghana made the last goal in the 46 minute mark, and the U.S. team could not make another goal to tie the game.
