South Africa is the leading economic power house in all of Africa. It has vast mineral wealth, and it got rid of its apartheid regime to look forward for a racially equal society. Now, South Africa is in the center of attention as the dark cloud of xenophobia runs through the poorest part of South Africa, provoking attacks against South Africa's immigrants and plunging the country into chaos.

The situation has gotten so bad that many immigrants are hiding behind police stations, and just recently South Africa and other international agencies are planning to setup "temporary places of safety" or special refugee camps to protect the immigrants. Some critics allege that such camps would turn into "ghettos", further endangering the lives of the immigrants.

After the era of apartheid, South Africa was the on its way to become a society without racial prejudice. But now, economic hardship is driving the insane psychological notion that immigrants are the source of problem. The situation has become another embarrassment for South Africa, pushing the government to extreme measures of setting up protective zones for the immigrants. The problem lies with those who are provoking violence against the immigrants, and I am fully confident that the South African society can solve this problem through social means, not with government intervention.
